Description

Ivor Gurney was a War Composer in the truest sense, writing music whilst on active service during the First World War.  In this first volume of a new Ivor Gurney Song Edition, published in association with the Ivor Gurney Trust, is presented all of the songs composed by Gurney during his time in France and in the few months following his return.

The volume contains some of Gurney’s best known and most powerful writings, newly edited from Gurney’s manuscripts.  Two of the songs appear in previously unpublished versions, while Gurney’s setting of A.E. Housman’s ‘On Wenlock Edge’ has never before been published and appears in print for the first time.  In the case of ‘In Flanders’, the editors have restored Gurney’s original intentions, having returned to Gurney’s own manuscript for this edition, rather than the transcription that was the basis of the previously published edition.

Volume 2 is currently in preparation: unpublished songs, 1918.
