Philip Lancaster: ‘Encroaching Shadows’ — for solo piano

£12.00

A cycle of 17 haiku for solo piano, after Tomas Tranströmer.

Based on a selection of short poems by the Nobel laureate, Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, this set of haiku for solo piano consists of 17 movements of just 17 bars each.  The shortest piece is just 40 seconds long; the longest 1 minute 20 seconds.

The cycle can be performed in three ways: complete, as a single span; by section, the set being divided into three sections; or singly, selected freely at the performer’s will.

The piano haiku each try to capture something of the poems that inspired them, and of the nature of haiku itself, in being a small window onto a much larger image.  Each piece is prefaced by the haiku that inspired it, Tranströmer’s original Swedish and Robin Fulton’s English translation.
